Baker College’s Cadillac campus is now offering testing for the GED credential in tandem with test preparation resources provided by Northwest Michigan Works! All services and tests are at no cost for participants.

"Earning a GED credential is the first step many must take to prepare for meaningful careers," said Kelly Smith, Baker College of Cadillac president. "Through our partnership with Michigan Works!, area residents can take their exams close to home, saving them time and money. Baker College truly appreciates this opportunity to share resources for the betterment of our community and its residents."

Northwest Michigan Works! offers self-paced, individualized instruction to prepare for the GED testing. The Cadillac Michigan Works! Learning Lab is open Monday through Thursday, with daytime and evening hours. The instruction is free of charge; each participant also receives free vouchers for the official GED Ready practice tests and the four GED subject tests, valued at a minimum of $174.

“Having Baker College as an authorized testing site is excellent news for our program participants,” said David Carpenter, instructor at Michigan Works! Cadillac Learning Lab. “Previously, they would need to drive 60 to 90 miles round trip multiple times to a test site – most often to Traverse City.”

The subject tests require a total of 7.25 hours. Carpenter said that students usually take one, maybe two tests at each sitting in order to focus on a specific subject and achieve higher scores. They may retake any test as many times as needed until they pass.

The GED testing center at Baker College’s Cadillac campus is authorized by the State of Michigan and tests are administered by a chief examiner who receives annual training.
